Oba Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin, has bestowed a royal plaque upon the renowned afrobeats artist, Rema.
The Oba presented this honor to Rema during a visit to his palace on Thursday, coinciding with the singer’s preparations for his homecoming concert at the Ogbe Stadium in Benin City.
Prior to this, Rema had joined the Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, who announced that the 6,000-capacity venue would be named the Rema Dome in recognition of the artist’s contributions.
Rema, whose birth name is Divine Ikubor, hails from Benin City and has consistently served as a proud representative of Edo State, showcasing the region and the rich heritage of the ancient Benin empire through his music and performances.
His recent single, “Benin Boys,” featuring fellow Edo native Shallipopi, serves as a homage to the city of Benin. In this track, Rema expressed that he merits a medal from the Oba for his efforts in promoting the kingdom.
