President Bola Tinubu returns from France, to swear in new Chief Justice today

President Bola Tinubu returns Abuja early on Friday morning, August 23, 2024, after a short work trip to France.

He landed at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport around 2:25 am. Later today, President Tinubu is scheduled to officiate the swearing-in of the new Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, at the State House Council Chambers.

This event will formally appoint Justice Kudirat Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun as the new CJN, taking over from Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who has recently retired. Tinubu traveled to France on Monday for official duties before returning to Nigeria.

The National Judicial Council, NJC, had put forward Justice Kekere-Ekun for the role during its 106th meeting on August 15.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, confirmed that the swearing-in ceremony is set to proceed as planned.

“President Tinubu will swear in Justice Ariwoola’s successor at the State House Council Chambers on August 23, 2024,” Ngelale stated.
