Omah Lay, the Afrobeats artist, has expressed that his colleagues from Nigeria and other nations are emulating his musical style.
He asserted that he has pioneered a new sound within the Afrobeats genre, which many of his contemporaries are now imitating.
In a recent interview with Billboard, Omah Lay remarked, “The artists emerging from Nigeria at this moment, and Afrobeats artists in general, are incorporating elements of my work; it seems everyone is attempting to replicate something I initiated.”
The artist known for his hit ‘Soso’ also criticized prominent figures in Afrobeats for diluting the genre in an effort to attract international audiences and increase their financial gain.
He expressed concern over the influence of the South African genre, amapiano, infiltrating Afrobeats clubs.
“I don’t think I am happy with what the pioneers of Afrobeats are doing right now. The front guys are watering it down by just chasing the bags.
“I can’t remember the last time I heard a proper Afrobeats Song. It’s now Amapiano in Afrobeats clubs, not a proper Afrobeats song,” he lamented.
